Hometown 2.0: Truman Haut, Funeral Director/Owner at Haut Funeral Home
June 30, 2026
For Truman Haut, Jamestown has always been home. As a lifelong resident and fifth-generation owner of Haut Funeral Home, he is continuing a family tradition of serving the community that spans more than a century.
Growing up in the funeral business, Truman was introduced early to the importance of compassion, service, and supporting families through some of life's most difficult moments. Although he initially attended North Dakota State University without a clear career path in mind, he soon realized that continuing the family legacy was where he belonged. After his second year, he transferred to mortuary science school before returning to Jamestown in 2014. Following a year-long internship required for licensure in North Dakota, he became a licensed funeral director in January 2015.
That internship provided invaluable experience, allowing Truman to be involved in every aspect of funeral service and preparing him for the responsibilities he would eventually take on as owner.
Today, Truman considers becoming the fifth-generation owner of Haut Funeral Home to be his greatest career milestone.
"I take great pride in being able to keep the firm in the family and continue serving families as we have for over 100 years," he said.
While his work keeps him busy, Truman says one of the best things about Jamestown is the balance it offers.
"There's usually something going on around town to attend or be a part of, but you still have that small-town feel of knowing a lot of people," he shared.
When asked to recommend a local hidden gem, Truman points to one of the community's favorite fall traditions, the Shriner Clowns Pumpkin Patch. With activities for families of all ages, it is one of his favorite annual events and a great example of the community spirit that makes Jamestown special.
Outside of work, Truman enjoys spending time with his two young children, golfing, and relaxing at the lake with family and friends.
For young professionals considering a move, or a return, to the area, his advice is simple.
"If the career seems like a good fit, give Jamestown a chance. I know some may stay away because we're a smaller community, but there's a lot to do, and it's a great place to raise a family."
