ND's population growing partly due to abundance of jobs, study says

Friday, February 08, 2019

Jobs seem to be the No. 1 reason bringing people to or taking them away from North Dakota in the past year, a study found. Moving company United Van Lines released its national movers study the first week of January.  “A lot of people are moving out of or into North Dakota to be closer to their family or for a new job. The majority of reasons people nationwide move is for a job,” said Eily Cummings, spokeswoman for United Van Lines. Of the people who were moving in North Dakota, more than half moved into the state for a job and...

Hundreds Of Homemade Food Businesses Flourish Under State Food Freedom Laws

Friday, January 25, 2019

Almost four years after the nation’s first “food freedom” law was enacted, hundreds of new local businesses have sprouted across three states, and without a single outbreak of a foodborne illness. Completely exempt from any licensing, permitting, or inspection requirements, residents operating under their state’s food freedom act can create and sell almost any homemade dish imaginable, except those that contain meat. Homemade food businesses are also free to sell at farmers’ markets, roadside stands, and from farms, ranches, and homes, so long as they sell their goods directly to an “informed end consumer,” i.e. someone who knows they’re buying something...
More and more states are seeing job openings outnumbering jobless

Friday, January 25, 2019

Job openings are outnumbering unemployed workers across increasingly wide swaths of the country, forcing businesses to rethink how they find workers. The volume of openings first topped the number of jobless people in Midwestern states in early 2017. But in recent months that phenomenon has spread to other regions, particularly the South. The Labor Department on Tuesday is to release the latest data on job openings, from November. The report follows data released last week showing a surge in job growth in December and could help the Federal Reserve assess sometimes conflicting anecdotal reports about how hard firms must work to fill...

A brave new world of work

Monday, December 03, 2018

FARGO — We're a long way from the science fiction realms of Westworld, Blade Runner or Star Wars, where robots, androids and artificial intelligences do the dirty jobs, cater to our whims, and sometimes pay us back with bloody R-rated rebellion. But change is coming to many, if not most, workplaces. Robotics, AI and machine learning already have a major impact. Just ask the folks in the U.S. auto industry, which employs nearly half of the nation's robots — and a lot fewer assembly line workers. For workers to survive and thrive in the workplace in the next couple decades, the ability to...

North Dakota Entrepreneur Realizing Huge Success

Monday, November 19, 2018

Ruthless, money hungry, cut throat, uncompromising, hyper-competitive are words often associated with successful entrepreneurs. Scott Bintz has proven being fortune- and fame-focused is unnecessary and counterproductive if one wants to go beyond building bank accounts. “Scott Bintz is on a mission to make people’s lives better.” (scottbintz.com) Bintz grew a home basement hobby business into a multi-million dollar e-commerce enterprise by living and working on principles based on culture, not profits. Although his current book is titled Principles to Fortune, Bintz noted Principles to Blessings may have been a more accurate title.  His work hasn’t been focused on building wealth.  Success for...

Thursday, November 15, 2018

Reasons to Support Small Businesses on Nov. 24th and Beyond November 24 is Small Business Saturday, a shopping holiday that urges consumers to patronize small and independent businesses rather than online retailers or big box stores. American Express was behind the first Small Business Saturday, which started in 2010. The initial goal was to counter the negative effects of the recession on small businesses and local economies. The holiday quickly caught on. In 2011, the Senate passed a resolution in support of Small Business Saturday. Consumers have now spent an estimated $85 billion at independent retailers and restaurants over the eight Small Business...

America’s 50 best cities to live

Wednesday, October 24, 2018

24/7 Wall Street created a weighted index of over two-dozen measures to identify the best American cities to live in. The communities on this list span the country from coast to coast but are disproportionately concentrated in the Midwest. Jamestown, North Dakota ranked number 27: The typical household in Jamestown earns $49,086 a year, slightly less than the median income nationwide of $55,322 a year. Still, because costs are relatively low in Jamestown, a dollar goes further in the city.
