GRE construction continues: Two years of cold, snowy weather — Published February 24 2010
About 420 construction workers are building inside and out on Great River Energy’s Spiritwood Station in a race to meet the Oct. 1 online date for the power plant. And for the second winter, snow and cold weather hamper the work on the coal-fired power and heat plant near Spiritwood. Dennis Pozarnsky, GRE construction site manager, said within about 10 days, the number of workers will climb to more than 500 as temperatures begin to warm.

Building permits totaling $4 million worth of construction projects occurred in January alone in Jamestown and Building Official Jim Weight figures he’ll see 10 times that amount by the end of March.
 
City Council votes to take half of 1 percent sales tax — Published February 17 2010
In a special meeting Tuesday, the City Council voted 4-1 to take half of the city’s 1 percent sales tax for infrastructure improvements and extended the tax out to 2022. The resolution taking the funds focuses what is now about $1 million on reducing city-wide special assessments on infrastructure, including street work as well as sanitary and storm sewer systems. The funds will start going into city coffers March 1.
 
JSDC approves Goodrich lease — Published February 09 2010
The economic slump in the airline industry brought Goodrich Corp. officials to the Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corp. Board meeting Monday to request no increase to its upcoming five-year lease agreement. The JSDC Board unanimously agreed to the request.

Jamestown Medical Foundation donates $3,500 to CNA training — January 27, 2010
The Jamestown Medical Foundation has donated $3,500 to the training skills class which is held monthly at the James Valley Career and Technology Center. The class is the brainchild of the Medical Leaders Roundtable formed from the Jamestown/Stutsman Develoment Corp. Strategic Plan/Training Center Committee co-chaired by Dave Smette and Lisa Hicks. Members of the group are Lyle Grove, Linda Nygaard, Leah Schulz, Cindy Clemens, Marty Richman, Shar Gumke, Jackie Mangnall, Sue Johnson and Linda Fuchs.
 
Sales tax: Committee rejects taking 50 percent for city — Published January 20 2010
The City Council’s Finance and Legal Committee Tuesday rejected taking 50 percent of the 1-cent sales tax for infrastructure or putting the measure on the ballot.
 
JSDC changes bylaws — Published January 12 2010
The Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corp. Board voted unanimously Monday to change its bylaws, allowing the City Council to choose its JSDC Board member. The bylaws previously read the designated board member shall be the “Jamestown City Mayor and/or his/her designee.” It will now read “a member of the Jamestown City Council, chosen by the Jamestown City Council.” Bylaws changes do not require approval from the City Council or the Stutsman County Commission.

Construction nearly done on N.D. wind farm — Published December 21 2009
It’s been nearly 60 years since a windmill has spun on Richard Haugeberg’s wheat farm in north-central North Dakota. The old weathered water-pumping windmill on Haugeberg’s property near Max was considered a landmark in the region, and one of the few structures rising from the wide-open prairie. But now it’s dwarfed by dozens of electric-generating wind towers that have shot up since late summer.

City Council goes ahead with project — Published December 10 2009
In a special meeting Wednesday, the City Council voted 4-1 to go ahead with the Business Loop East reconstruction project. The council voted to pay the entire 10 percent local share of the cost of constructing the main roadway and half the 20 percent local share of the frontage road. The vote lowers the cost to property owners in the area by an estimated $206,000.
 
Mayor’s authority questioned — December 08, 2009
The mayor’s authority came into question on a number of issues at the City Council meeting Monday. Mayor Clarice Liechty objected to Councilman Pat Nygaard signing the resolution authorizing a $75,000 Flex PACE interest buy down for Buffalo City Diesel. During the mayor’s report, Liechty said she wouldn’t sign the resolution until she had additional documentation on Dean Hafner’s financial information.
